Metabolites from Mediterranean plants: characterization and transformation. Chemotaxonomic assessment and biological activity.
Herbicidal potential of aqueous extracts from Melia azedarach L., Artemisia arborescens L., Rhus coriaria L. and Lantana camara L.
2017
In the search for new strategies for weed management in agricultural systems, a great interest is to use the plant extracts to replace or integrate, chemical weed control. Two experiments were done to test the effects of plant water extracts from Chinaberry (Melia azedarach L.), Tree Wormwood (Artemisia arborescens (Vaill.) L.), Sicilian Sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) and Lantana (Lantana camara L.) on seed germination of Rocket (Eruca sativa Mill.), Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), Bladderflower (Araujia sericifera Brot.) and Psyllium (Plantago psyllium L). The water extracts (pure and 50% mixtures) from the donor species were applied on seeds of recipient plants. In second experiment in pots, thes…
Disegni botanici di Angelina Damiani Lanza (1879 - 1936)
2017
Botanical drawings of Angelina Damiani Lanza (1879 - 1936). The drawings of Sicilian plants made by Ange- lina Damiani are reported and commented. After a brief presentation of the author’s personality, the technique used in the drawings is examined, together with the relevant value from the artistic and botanical point of view. This material, mainly consisting of pencil drawings gathered in an album recently donated to the Director of the Palermo Botanical Garden, sin- ce 2006 is exhibited in the small historical museum set up in one of the halls of the monumental Gymnasium of the same Botanical Garden. Most of the drawings done by Angelina Damiani for the studies of her husband, the Sicil…
Principi di spontaneizzazione in Sicilia di Talinum paniculatum (Talinaceae)
2017
Record of Talinum paniculatum (Talinaceae) naturalized in Sicily. – The record in the urban context of Palermo (Sicily) of Talinum paniculatum, species native to Tropical America and mainly cultivated for ornamental purposes, is reported. It is the first case of naturalization in the Island of a species of Talinaceae family introduced to Palermo in 1984 from Argentina and cultivated in the Botanical Garden collections.
The role of Plant Growth Promoting (PGP) bacteria in the growth of Mediterranean diet plants producing high-value compounds
2023
Loss of fertility, together with drought and aridity, results in soil unproductivity and eventually desertification. Unsustainable agricultural practices are currently stressing the soil: an undervalued resource that, in addition to food, provides a multitude of invaluable services such as regulating the microclimate, reducing contaminants, and capturing CO2. Hence, there is an increasing need to resort to sustainable approaches toward agricultural systems. Although Sicily is one of those regions most affected by water shortages, it is at the same time a reservoir of drought-resistant Mediterranean plants with high nutritional value and a rich microbiota. This project aims to promote agricu…
